Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita dug a patch of cool dirt in the shade when we took a break during our hike on the Gregory Canyon Trail this morning. Griff woofed at her while she was scratching up dirt, which gave her pause for a moment. When she resumed her work, Griff let out a single, loud bark. I'm not sure why Griff was so upset about Mamacita's dirt patch, but his method of dissuasion proved effective in putting an end to her efforts, so she just made do with what she had already dug up. Meanwhile, Colby and Sputnik stood by, drinking water from the CamelBak and looking out over the trail from our mountain vista. Variety Pack It was a hot afternoon and before long, the pack settled into a

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Mamacita, and Sputnik all enjoyed a break at the stream when we hiked the Gregory Canyon Trail again this morning. There were several other dogs along the way whom Griff was happy to greet, while Mamacita and Sputnik waited calmly at my far side until we resumed the hike. Variety Pack Milo, Yoda, Isaac, and Zoey enjoyed a light hike at the CU South Campus trails this afternoon. Isaac was feeling a little too feisty and jabbed at my leg while he impatiently waited for his packmates, after hopping out of the packmobile. I replied to him sternly and held him at a distance while the rest of the pack got out, so he wouldn't harass any of them. Once we got moving, he zipp

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Colby, and Sputnik hiked the Gregory Canyon Trail this morning. Colby and Griff enjoyed splashing around in a stream we passed, while Sputnik was more mellow as he hung out at the water's edge with me. At the end of our hike, Sputnik tried to mount Colby and earned himself a snappy retort. When we got back to the packmobile, Griff was so tuckered out that he had to rest his head on Sputnik's back while they waited to be let in. Variety Pack Zoey and Griff played lots of fetch at the dog park this afternoon, while Benny was more interested in greeting the other dogs there. Zoey and Griff broke up their rounds of fetch with some long chases, in which they raced around

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Isaac was happy to join Sputnik, Rucksack, and Mamacita on the pack hike this morning. We again made many stops in the tall grass beside the trail so the pack could sniff around. Sputnik left the most scent marks, as usual; but I was surprised that Mamacita also wanted to leave a lot of marks along the way. We took a long break in the stream at the Gregory Canyon trail head. Isaac lay down to soak in the water while Sputnik, Mamacita, and Rucksack all waded through it. We took the less-intense Crown Rock Trail instead of the Amphitheater Trail today since it felt a bit too hot for such a steep ascent. Variety Pack Clover, Monarch, Zoey, and Isaac walked around Wonderland

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We made a lot of brief stops along the Baseline Trail for the pack to sniff and leave scent marks this morning. We passed a worker on a bucket sled machine with a loud engine, which caused both Griff and Colby to leap into the tall grass in order to give the noisy contraption the widest berth possible. I was surprised that Mamacita didn't bark, since she tends to be irritated by noisy motors of trucks and motorcycles on the road. I was surprised at what little water Colby and Griff wanted when we reached the peak of our hike. Sputnik and Mamacita were both quite thirsty, on the other hand. Variety Pack Isaac, Zoey, Griff, and Mamacita walked the Bear Creek Path this aftern

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Mamacita, and Griff endured a brief, light hailing at the Chautauqua this morning. We've had a lot of hailstorms in the last couple weeks! Thankfully, this one came with only pea-sized balls and didn't last very long, nor did the sprinkling of rain that followed. Besides the weather, it was a pretty mellow morning, with plenty of sniffing around in the tall grass as we took a leisurely pace along the trail. Variety Pack Skies were a mix of blue or gray depending on which quadrant you were watching this afternoon. It stayed pretty pleasant for Griff and Mamacita's late afternoon pack walk at Wonderland Lake, where the leisurely grass-sniffing of this morning contin

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack A friendly Husky pup stopped on the trail to sniff hello this morning. Griff was happy to oblige while Colby and Sputnik waited to get on the move again. We saw a giant bumblebee with apparently damaged wings crawling across the trail at one point. A short while later, another bee buzzed in circles around us in a manner that felt as if it was security detail checking our pass to continue up the mountain. Apparently we made the cut, since no one got stung. Colby seemed a bit more antsy and on alert than usual today, particularly when we reached the top of the mountain. Instead of taking water with her packmates, she kept tuning in to subtle noises in the distance, and loo

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita, Rucksack, and Sputnik side-stepped some friendly laborers working on trail renovations along the Baseline Trail this morning as we made our way to the Amphitheater Trail to head up the mountain. The trails were pretty busy today, so we had to stand to the side several times to let other hikers by on narrow stretches of the trail. Thankfully, Sputnik continued to keep calm and pleasant both times that other dogs passed by in this manner. When we made it back down the mountain and approached the trail head, it sounded like an engine backfired a couple times in the distance, and this really set Mamacita on edge. She was in a real hurry to finish our lap around the p

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack I'm not sure weather it's the warmer weather, the more strenuous hike, or a bit of maturity creeping in, but Sputnik has been much calmer about unfamiliar dogs on the trails in recent weeks. We passed a few today, including two who were pulling at their leashes and throwing fits on relatively narrow stretches of trail, but Sputnik trotted along at my side without paying them any mind. Griff was less enthusiastic about greeting dogs on the trail today, and was happy to just keep going instead, as was Rucksack. Variety Pack Benny, Oliver, Griff, and Zoey enjoyed a walk around Wonderland Lake this afternoon. Skies were gray when we set out and lightning strikes started in the

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We passed by several other dogs on the trails today. The first was a little puppy who came up to the pack. There were a couple other as we ascended and descended the mountain, and then we came across a Golden Retriever we've seen before as we made our way back across the Chautauqua meadow toward the parking area. Colby and Sputnik both stayed cool and collected through the greetings and close passings with other dogs, while Griff eagerly sniffed hello with each dog he could. Variety Pack Griff joined Isaac and Zoey at the Valmont Dog Park this afternoon. He gleefully chased after Isaac while Isaac played fetch. Meanwhile, Zoey wandered around the park to sniff. Griff mad

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita dug herself another patch in the dirt at the high point of our hike this morning, and lay in it for a while as we rested in the shade. She insisted on stopping to get pets from a hiker we passed on the way back down. Surprisingly, Sputnik didn't butt his way in to steal the attention, as he often does when people say hello to the pack. Variety Pack Zoey had fun dodging and racing around with an Australian Shepherd at the dog park this afternoon while Yoda kept a more mellow demeanor as he made rounds and sniffed hello with all the dogs in the area. When the Aussie left, Zoey turned to fetch. Yoda found a couple other black Labs who were hanging out by the water spi

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack sniffed hello with a couple of the dogs we passed on the trails this morning. Sputnik kept his cool for most of the time, but did start a shrill growl when he got uncomfortable about one of the dogs lingering and staring at us after a brief sniff. Colby and Griff remained friendly and calm even when Sputnik started getting agitated. We did the same steep hike that we've been doing the past couple weeks but it felt a bit easier today. Maybe I'm getting acclimated to the trail again, or maybe it's just that the weather is both cooler and drier than it was through the first half of the month. Variety Pack Zoey found a doodle friend to run with by the pond at the CU S

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger took Rucksack's place in the pack this morning. He was happy to be out on the trails with Mamacita and Sputnik. We came across surprisingly few hikers for such a temperate day; however, there was one dog we passed early on with whom Sputnik exchanged some growls as they both eyed each other with distrust. Our way up the mountain saw nobody else on the trails. Spuntik stopped stubbornly to sniff around at many points along the way. Mamacita and Roger Roger followed my lead better, but were happy to sniff around whenever I let Sputnik have a moment to check out whatever caught his nose. Variety Pack Milo and Zoey walked the Bear Creek Path this afternoon. Our o

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack was back to sniffing in the grass beside the Baseline Trail this morning. Mamacita, Rucksack, Griff, and Sputnik all wanted to perform thorough investigations in the tall grass, so we took our time. After our ascent, everyone was unsurprisingly very interested in a water break. Griff has lost his shyness about drinking from the CamelBak spout and has been going right for it this week. Sputnik is always happy to take water, and seems to have an unquenchable thirst. I get the feeling that he would keep drinking for as long as I keep it flowing. I let him drink a good long while, but he is always happy to take more. Variety Pack Zoey and Isaac enjoyed a walk along

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack There wasn't much sniffing around when we set out on the trail this morning, so we made it up past the intersection with the Saddle Rock Trail. We did take one long pause during our ascent when we came upon a snake in the middle of the trail. Besides me, Colby was the only one who seemed to even notice the obstruction. Griff and Sputnik just stood and looked around as if they were wondering what the holdup was - or maybe they were just too busy panting to care about snakes. Variety Pack Due to some absences in our usual crew, Zoey was our only pack member this afternoon. She had no trouble finding friends at the dog park, though. She happily trotted around with them, and

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Mamacita, and Sputnik all took their time at the outset of our hike this morning. Everyone wanted to sniff around in the grass and Mamacita needed to wiggle in it for a bit before she was satisfied. After a slow start, we picked up our pace on the way up the mountain. On the way back down, we were back to a stop-and-start rhythm as Sputnik and Mamacita kept wanting to check out spots along the way. Variety Pack Zoey looked like a completely different dog today, after getting a new haircut. She and Isaac enjoyed a peaceful walk along the Bear Creek Path. A couple skateboarders passed us at one point but neither Isaac nor Zoey minded their rumbling as they went by.

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby, Griff, and Sputnik kept a steady pace up the Amphitheater Trail this morning. We hung out in the shade for a few minutes once we reached the crest, and everyone was happy to take some water as they were all panting from the workout. We didn't encounter many other hikers on the trail today. Variety Pack Isaac bolted straight for the pond when I let him and Zoey off leash at the CU South Campus trails this afternoon. Zoey followed him over but she kept to the edge of the water while Isaac hopped right in for a swim. Mamacita sniffed around in the tall grass while Zoey flirted with the water and Isaac got his soak on. Zoey and Isaac befriended a Miniature Collie and h

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The cloud cover was a mixed blessing in today's heat, as it came with high humidity. The pack got a good workout going up the Amphitheater Trail again today. Roger Roger joined us in place of his brother Rucksack, and had fun exploring alongside Griff. When we reached the high point of our hike at the intersection with the Saddle Rock Trail, Mamacita dug herself a patch down to cooler dirt and then lay in it before taking some water. Griff was so eager to have a drink that I didn't even have to coax him. Sputnik and Roger Roger both took water as often as they could. Variety Pack Milo had his first pack outing to the Valmont Dog Park this afternoon. He seemed a bit less

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack got a good workout as we kept a steady pace on our way up the Amphitheater Trail this morning. After reaching the high point of our hike, a group of teenagers wanted to say hello to the dogs. Sputnik was quick to go up and get some pets. Mamacita stared lovingly into the eyes of a girl who scratched her neck. Rucksack leaned against a few of them in turn as they loved on him. It was a great reward to the dogs for making through a vigorous workout, and they loved every minute of it. Variety Pack Coco, Zoey, and Stella enjoyed a walk by Wonderland Lake this afternoon. We took our time so the dogs could smell the dandelions. They also smelled the fences, the tall

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack There was a steady drizzle as Griff, Colby, and Sputnik hiked with me this morning. The dogs were in no hurry as they lingered to sniff along the Baseline Trail on our way to Gregory Canyon. We went slowly up the Amphitheater Trail as I watched my footing on the wet boulders. Aside from a few people by the trail head, we didn't pass any other hikers. Colby was a bit wary of a jogger that came up behind us just as we set out. Variety Pack The rain held off for a while this afternoon, which made the pack's visit to the Valmont Dog Park more pleasant. Coco was in a very playful mood. She and Mamacita ran and dodged around with one another a bit. Coco also made friends with
