Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Isaac joined the usual Friday hikers - Sputnik, Rucksack, and Mamacita - for our trip up the Saddle Rock Trail this morning. It was still hot out, but slightly more tolerable than it had been through the week. Still, we spent a good while at the stream each time we crossed it, and the dogs were all happy to get wet. Variety Pack Milo, Clover, and Monarch walked the Boulder Creek Path together this afternoon. Clover was very eager to get into the water and she lay right down in it like Isaac always does, and like Milo did yesterday. Milo only waded through the creek today. Monarch hung out on the bank for a while before finally being tempted to step into the water with her

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer had her second hike with the pack today. She didn't pull at the leash so consistently and I wonder whether that can be attributed to her starting to learn the rules and follow her packmates versus her just being sapped of energy due to the heat. Either way, she did a very good job of walking alongside her packmates for most of the hike. Griff again helped out by boxing her out when she threatened to pull ahead of the group. Meanwhile, Sputnik was busy sniffing Milo and licking his ears as they hiked alongside each other. Variety Pack Milo and Isaac were happy to hop into the pond to escape the heat this afternoon. Bugs were out in force today and kept following and

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We took long breaks at the stream today, both on our way up the trail and on our way back. Yoda took his time sniffing and exploring off leash while Sputnik and Mamacita hiked on leash at my side. Sputnik found a small chunk of wood on the trail and carried it down the mountain with him. When we reached the stream, he dropped it in the water and then spent a while trying to fish it back out again. There is something amusing about how casually Sputnik dips his snout into the water and lingers with it there. On the way back along the Meadow Trail, Mamacita flopped down in the tall grass on a hillside and wiggled on her back as she slid back down to the trail, twice. Sputn

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We had a new member join the pack today - Racer! Racer is a very fun and friendly, black, Lab/Pointed mix. She got along with Sputnik, Griff, and Colby immediately. They all sniffed each other and quickly decided they could be friends. When we hit the trail, Racer was all over the place with excitement. Colby was a bit annoyed with the spastic outburst, and cuffed Racer's muzzle with an open mouth, without biting down. It was enough for Racer to take the point, and she stopped bouncing and dodging all over the place amidst her new packmates, but she was still full of eager energy to get hiking. Racer pulled quite a bit for about the first 20 minutes of the hike, but the

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger joined his brother Rucksack and our usual Monday hikers - Mamacita and Sputnik - for our trip up the Saddle Rock Trail this morning. It was sunny and hot, so we took water breaks early and often. A couple hikers whom we passed on the way up asked to say hello to the dogs. The pack were happy to oblige. Roger Roger and Mamacita both got some pats, while Sputnik pushed to the front so he could get as much love as possible. Surprisingly, Rucksack hung back so he only got a few pats from the nearest of the two hikers. Variety Pack Zoey played a whole lot of fetch at the dog park today. Without Isaac there to compete with (and consistently outrace) her, she stayed

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Zoey, Mamacita, and Rucksack enjoyed a hike up the Saddle Rock Trail this morning. Sputnik made many, many stops along the Baseline Trail to leave scent marks on our way to the mountain. His packmates were happy to stop with him the first handful of times, but eventually they just wanted to keep moving. When we reached the stream, everybody was ready to make another pit stop to enjoy the water just before the trail started ascending. Once we were on the mountain, Sputnik eased off the scent-marking and focused more on the climb.

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby had fun playing scout on the trail this morning by running up ahead along the trail, with Griff following close behind her. Sputnik stayed on the leash with me. We didn't make so many stops to sniff around in the grass today. Everyone was happy to stop in the stream a few times along the way. Sputnik was always the thirstiest of the pack, as usual. Variety Pack Zoey, Isaac, and Sputnik all got into the pond at the CU South Campus trails at the beginning of our walk this afternoon. Once everyone had a chance to get wet, we got moving along. There weren't many dogs out there today but we did come across a few, including a Rottweiler who almost looked like Sputnik, mi

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik and Milo hit the trails at the Chautauqua this morning. It was sunnier today than it has been lately, but not too hot. Even though the temperature was mild, Milo took the opportunity to lie down in the shade while Sputnik sniffed around in the tall grass. Variety Pack Milo, Zoey, and Sputnik walked the Boulder Creek Path together this afternoon. We made one stop in the creek. Milo made the most of it by laying in the water, while Sputnik and Zoey waded through it. I caught a photo of the dogs while Sputnik was in the middle of shaking off some water; Milo immediately followed suit.

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby was a little more jumpy about other hikers today and she took a detour through the tall grass as one jogger passed us, so as to put some distance between him and herself. Griff and Sputnik weren't worried about the people, and stuck to the trails except when they wanted to sniff out a spot and leave a scent mark. Variety Pack Sputnik, Zoey, Isaac, and Milo walked the Bear Creek Path together this afternoon. Sputnik kept stubbornly veering off to the side of the path to try to leave scent marks every 20 yards or so. I started keeping him on a shorter leash so he wouldn't be as tempted, and that helped reduce the frequency of his pulling. A light sprinkle started durin

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Look closely at the first photo of the pack this morning and guess which pack member kept walking through the dew-laden tall grass to sniff around and pee. That's right, it was the one with the soaking wet head - Sputnik. Rucksack kept nice and dry while sporting a tight new trim. Mamacita sniffed around in the grass a couple times early on in the hike, and had a few wet drops on her face to show for it. Variety Pack Zoey and Sputnik spent the sunny afternoon walking around Wonderland Lake. We made a stop at the house before heading out for the walk, and the pair of them enjoyed chasing each other around and around. Once we headed out, they settled down and walked very ni

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita enjoyed yet another wiggle in the grass during our hike this morning. She and Sputnik both lingered in the stream for as long a they could when we crossed it, while Rucksack was surprisingly content to just step right across it and start heading along the trail. Sputnik was happy when a little boy asked to pet him. He immediately stepped up and laid his head against the boys chest.Rucksack seemed to be in a hurry to get back to the car when we started hearing thunder in the distance. Mamacita usually doesn't react well to thunder, but she actually seemed pretty calm and unfazed today. Sputnik didn't mind it at all. Variety Pack Molly, Isaac, and Zoey walked the B

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We took our time along the Baseline Trail again this morning before we reached the mountains. Mamacita again flopped down to wiggle in the tall grass, while Sputnik, Griff, and Colby sniffed around. Colby was back to being more mellow about passing hikers, and took it in stride without darting off the side of the trail as they went by. Variety Pack Mamacita was pretty tuckered out from her hike this morning, so she spent most of our park visit lounging around while Isaac and Zoey raced after tennis balls. Isaac make good use of the kiddie pool; Zoey just got her paws wet. Zoey stole a special, blue, rubber ball from park regular Thor - a Jack Russell Terrier - and played a

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita and Sputnik really took their time on the trails this morning. They both waded through the tall grass and got covered in tiny yellow buds. Sputnik only went through the grass once, but he made a lot of stops to leave scent marks along the way. Mamacita spent as much time in the midst of the grass as she could, and she flopped down in it for a good, long wiggle. When she got up from wiggling in it and took a few steps back toward the trail, I though she was done; but then she immediately flopped back down and started wiggling again. Variety Pack Yoda and Zoey were happy to hop into Boulder Creek on our walk this afternoon. Yoda stayed in the water for a while, but

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby and Griff enjoyed some off-leash time together this morning. Griff mostly stuck to the trail, while Colby wandered up the mountainside beside it. Sputnik didn't make quite as many stops to leave scent marks today as he has been doing lately, but he still marked several places along the way. Variety Pack It was entertaining to watch Zoey scramble for the tennis ball when she momentarily lost track of it off of a bounce, after chasing it down at the park this afternoon. Isaac is much more adept at keeping his eye on the ball, though he sometimes misjudges his quick approach and sends the ball ricocheting off his nose or a tooth. The pair of them kept up the rounds of f

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Mamacita, and Rucksack took their time to sniff along the trail this morning. The temperature was pretty mild and very nice for hiking, but the dogs all wanted to spend a while in the stream nonetheless; and Rucksack and Sputnik were both eager to drink as much water from the CamelBak as I would give them, as usual. Variety Pack We headed to Tantra Park from the CU South Campus trails and enjoyed a little bit more shade from the afternoon sun. Milo was especially interested in the shade, and wanted to stop to cool off each time we passed under a tree. Mamacita took advantage of one such break by flopping down in the grass and wiggling around for a bit.

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Mamacita, Roger Roger, and Rucksack were happy to linger at the stream each time we crossed it on our hike this morning. On our way back, we passed by a team of summer laborers working on the trail. We have seen them every day for the past week or two, and today they chatted with me a bit. Meanwhile, Roger Roger went up to one guy who was kneeling at the side of the trail, and stepped right up into his lap, to everyone's amusement. Sputnik and Rucksack got a few pats as well, and Mamacita was too tuckered out from the hike to cause any trouble, despite her penchant for harassing uniformed workers. Instead, she just walked by slowly, and timidly sniffed at the sa

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The stream by the Gregory Canyon trail head was a bit mucky so I didn't let the dogs drink from there today. After we made our way further up the Saddle Rock trail, the water cleared up and the dogs enjoyed a break. Colby was more at ease today than Tuesday, and didn't jump around when other hikers went by. Mamacita has been a little slow navigating the boulders on her way both up and down the mountain, and today she waited for a good minute before finding her way down the side of one. Griff, Sputnik, and Colby didn't seem to have any trouble climbing, although Sputnik made frequent stops to sniff around beside the trail and leave scent marks. Variety Pack Isaac and Roger

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik was the one sneezing this morning after he waded through the tall grass beside the Baseline Trail. We spent a little while in the stream by the Gregory Canyon trail head, as Rucksack, Roger Roger, Mamacita, and Sputnik all got their paws wet and had a drink. We headed up the Saddle Rock Trail from there instead of Gregory Canyon today. The incline is slightly steeper but there is more shade from trees along the way. Sputnik was especially mellow when we passed other dogs, and never stiffened up or gave any hint of a growl even when we passed within a few feet of a couple of them. Variety Pack Zoey, Roger Roger, Rucksack, and Mamacita enjoyed some nice cloud cover d

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Despite the hotter weather, Griff was less interested in taking water than he had been the past couple weeks. The dogs stirred up a bunch of pollen when they waded through the tall grass and flowers beside the trail today. I saw a mist in the air just before Griff started sneezing. Sputnik, Mamacita, and Colby seemed unperturbed by allergens. Colby was a bit more jumpy than usual about other hikers coming up from behind us on the trails. She kept spinning around to look over her shoulder, and she ducked into the grass as they went by. Variety Pack Milo, Zoey, and Isaac all enjoyed a dip in the pond at the CU South Campus trail loop this afternoon. Milo and Zoey just spla

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Zoey joined up with hiking regulars Sputnik and Mamacita for the morning's trip to the Chautauqua and the Gregory Canyon Trail. Sputnik and Mamacita both wanted to wade through the tall grass beside the Baseline Trail on our way to Gregory Canyon, and we made several stops for Zoey and Sputnik to leave scent marks. There was a lot of panting during our ascent, so we took a few water breaks along the way. The dogs were all eager to hop into the stream when we reached it further up the trail.
