Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer and Sputnik enjoyed their last pack hike for the next few weeks. They sniffed around the same spots together. Some stretches of trail were snowy, others were dry; both apparently had things to offer for the olfactory-oriented. Sputnik got a bit nervous about a couple of the dogs we passed, but didn't react beyond picking up his pace and giving a wary eye. Racer saw no reason to rush, and trotted along at my side without any disturbance. Variety Pack Blu, Avo, and Nala had a fun time walking at Wonderland Lake this afternoon. Avo and Blu broke out into some playful bowing, leaping, and dodging in the grassy park when we stopped for a few minutes. Just before the wal

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita nibbled on a lot of grass at the beginning of our hike this afternoon, until she spit it up with some stomach acid. After she got that out of her system, she wiggled around in the grass and seemed to be feeling better. Sputnik and Roger Roger were patient while Mamacita was taking her time. They occupied themselves by sniffing around nearby bushes and tufts of grass where they could leave their marks. Variety Pack Riley, Blu, and Nala walked around Wonderland Lake this afternoon. Nala did a slightly better job of staying on track, with Jen taking her leash. Blu and Riley walked along well with me. Our pack members were pretty interested in each dog we passed. B

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The Chautauqua Trails were pretty empty today, so Dylan and Roger Roger enjoyed running off-leash through the snow together for most of the hike. Roger Roger ran back every once in a while to play-bow in front of Sputnik and Mamacita, which got both of them worked up. The dogs had a lot of fun this morning! Variety Pack Nala, Blu, and Poppy all enjoyed each other's company this afternoon, both when we stopped at the house and then during our walk along the Boulder Creek Path. Nala was distracted by every flake of snow along the way, while Blu and Poppy mostly kept on pace and in their places at my sides. Nala and Poppy leapt around in the snow together during a stop at Ebe

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer and Sputnik enjoyed the snowy Mesa Trail this morning. The trails were far less busy than they have been in recent days. Racer hopped around in the snow at a couple points along the way, and Sputnik joined in with his own hops and play-bows. Variety Pack Riley, Blu, Nala, and Avo spent a little bit of time at the house before braving the elements for a walk this afternoon. Nala seemed slightly less distracted today as she walked alongside Avo. That was probably because there were far fewer people and dogs out walking to draw her attention. By the end of the walk, Blu seemed especially ready to get back into the warm, dry indoors.

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Dylan was happy to leave his stamp on one of the few snowy patches left along the Mesa Trail this morning. His wiggling took him unnervingly close to a precipice, so I called him to get up before he slid down the steep mountainside. He and Ruffers spent a little bit of time sniffing around off-leash together on empty stretches of trail, but they were on leash for more of the hike than usual since the trails are pretty busy and I didn't want them going up to people who are trying to avoid contact. Sputnik minded his manners quite well today, and didn't react to dogs who passed by. Mamacita had a bit of an upset stomach and nibbled some grass at the Chautauqua Park at the en

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer and Sputnik hit the Chautauqua trails together this morning. There were again more people out hiking with their dogs than usual during our Adventure Pack time. Racer walked very nicely today, and hardly pulled at all. Sputnik initiated a lot of stops to sniff and mark spots along the way. Racer joined in the sniffing about half the time, whenever a spot seemed particularly interesting. Variety Pack Nala, Avo, and Blu enjoyed their time out along the Boulder Creek Path this afternoon. Nala wanted to run off in every direction all at once, distracted by each and every goose, human, or dog in our general vicinity. Avo didn't pay particular attention to most of the hum

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik and Mamacita sniffed around together while Ruffers and Roger Roger roamed and checked out their own points of interest along the Mesa Trail this morning. With the warming weather and presumably a lot of people's work routines being interrupted due to COVID-19 isolation measures, the Chautauqua was a bit busier than usual, though still far from as busy as it gets on the weekends. Sputnik was pretty chill about other dogs we saw, even when some of them were extremely excitable and were pulling at their leashes to try to charge up to us. Variety Pack Nala, Riley, Rey, and Blu walked around Wonderland Lake this afternoon. Rey was very calm and respectful when greeting o

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack There was a friendly pack of dogs who passed us, jogging, on the way up the Mesa Trail this morning. Roger Roger, Dylan and Mamacita all sniffed hello with them, while Sputnik maintained his cool at my side. We crossed paths again a bit further up the trail, at which point Roger Roger and Dylan happily ran up. They all sniffed each other again and then ran around the trail together for a brief minute before we parted ways. Variety Pack The pack welcomed a new puppy this afternoon: Nala! Nala is from the same home as former pack regulars Benny and Oliver. She was a bit shy at first, but then really took a liking to her afternoon packmates Ruffers and Poppy. They all playe

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Sputnik, and Racer enjoyed hiking the Mesa Trail this morning. We kept a pretty steady pace throughout most of the hike, only interrupted occasionally for the pack to sniff around. It was pretty quiet, but a few dogs passed by along the way. Variety Pack Rey, Avo, and Riley were all very excited to get going this afternoon. Zoey carried herself with her usual tame demeanor. There was one spot on the trail around Wonderland Lake where the whole pack's noses shot to the ground, much like the Adventure Pack at Kohler Mesa yesterday. Whatever scent inspired the flurry of interest was a mystery to me. As we made our way around the pond, Avo tried to turn just about eve

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita was feeling much better today. Instead pausing to eat grass and vomit, she just wanted to wiggle in the grass. Dylan tested out both the grass and the snow. I think he preferred the snow, because he spent a lot longer wiggling and rolling around in it. He and Ruffers roamed Enchanted Mesa together, not venturing too far from me, Sputnik, and Mamacita. As we started making our way back along the Kohler Mesa Trail, there was a stretch that must have been traveled by a very interesting specimen, because everyone's noses shot to the ground. Dylan started trotting ahead with a purpose. Mamacita's ears perked up into full handlebar mode. Ruffers lingered behind, clo

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Mamacita, Racer, and Sputnik were all about sniffing around again this morning. They were also drawn to nibbling on the fresh grass that is starting to sprout. Mamacita especially took her time to sniff and nibble, and it turned out she had an upset stomach. We took a pretty casual pace throughout the hike to Enchanted Mesa. After we started to loop back, Mamacita seemed to be feeling a bit better and we went a bit more swiftly on the return leg. Variety Pack Avo barked with excitement as we pulled into the parking lot to the Valmont Dog Park, and Milo got going for a moment as well. Once in the park, Avo and Zoey went on the hunt for tennis balls while Milo wander

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers and Sputnik explored Enchanted Mesa and a part of Koehler Mesa together today. At first, they just roamed and sniffed together. Then, we came across a shaded stretch of trail that still had snow, and this brought out their playful sides. They proceeded to drop into play bows and then Sputnik chased Ruffers all around. Variety Pack Riley, Rey, and Zoey walked the Boulder Creek Path this afternoon. We passed some geese at the Kids' Fishing Pond, and one in particular lifted up its head and eyed Rey warily as we passed. I didn't blame the goose, since Rey kept bumping into me and tripping over my feet because she was so entranced watching the goose instead of paying

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack It was slow going on the trails this morning. The warmer weather and dissipating snow must be releasing a lot of interest scents, because Mamacita, Roger Roger, Dylan, and Sputnik all wanted to do a lot of sniffing. After the first stretch along Bluebell Road, most of the pack seemed satisfied to get moving, but Mamacita was on a mission. After following her nose along the edge of the trail for a while, she finally shouldered down onto the grass and went for a wiggle. When we reached the beginning of the Mesa Trail a short while later, Dylan and Roger Roger were the ones wiggling on their backs, but snow was their preferred medium for the art. As we ascended the Mesa Trai

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer and Sputnik stared silently while Ruffers crept forward into prime position for ambushing Griff, who was sniffing out the trail up ahead. The tension built when Ruffers made her move while Griff was distracted by a noise in the distance, unaware of the game at which he was the center. Ruffers blew past him, without any reaction from Griff. Ruffers came running back a moment later, and this time Griff turned and came running full-speed back toward the pack, with his packmate in hot pursuit. Racer and Sputnik dove into play bows as their packmates approached, and then everyone got pets as they bumped and wiggled around me. Variety Pack Today it was Rey making a good ex

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack had some excitement this morning when they sighted a jet-black squirrel foraging on the forest floor alongside the Mesa Trail. Dylan and Ruffers were quick to act, and sent it up the nearest tree while Sputnik and Mamacita whined and jumped up and down on-leash beside me. All eyes continued to follow the squirrel through the treetops as it hopped from branch to branch, until the squirrel's course diverged far enough from the trail. Variety Pack The pack was joined by Poppy & Dylan's business partner, Maggie, this afternoon. Maggie was a bit shy when the whole gang spilled out of the packmobile to sniff their greetings. Once everyone was acquainted, she hopped righ

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Racer, and Sputnik headed up the quiet Mesa Trail from the Chautauqua this morning. After some sniffing along Bluebell Road, we kept a steady pace through most of the rest of the hike, and only had a few encounters with other hikers. The warming temperatures made for a very pleasant outing. Sputnik was especially good about the few dogs we did encounter today, as were Griff and Racer. Variety Pack Avo and Rey were raring to go when we arrived at the Valmont Dog Park this afternoon. They had several chases during the course of our park visit, which all eventually turned into wrestling matches. There were a couple times I stepped in to interrupt Rey when she kept div

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita was very interested in the scents along Bluebell Road at the Chautauqua this morning. She kept pulling off to the side so she could follow sets of tracks or check out patches of yellow snow. Sputnik was quick to join her in sniffing out the yellow snow spots, and to leave his own mark behind. Ruffers was less drawn to the scents along Bluebell Road, but did her own fair share of sniffing around once we got up to the Mesa Trail. Variety Pack Riley and Rey practiced walking calmly and keeping their attention on me as other dogs passed by during our walk around Wonderland Lake this afternoon. They both did a pretty good job of responding to my redirection whenever th
