Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Due to the smoke that was thick in the air, I decided to take a leisurely pace along flat trails with Sputnik and Dylan. The boys were happy to take their time and thoroughly sniff various shrubs and blades of grass along the way. When they both got to be off leash together for a while, they just ambled along a short way ahead of me. Sputnik ran up ahead and spun around once; but when Dylan didn't react to the goading, Sputnik just trotted back and returned to sniffing around beside his buddy. Variety Pack A new pack member joined her first pack activity today: Imogene! Imogene is a 14-month-old Doodle who is already friends with Rey. Poppy was very excited to meet a new

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack When I let Griff off the leash today, he looked up at me a couple times as if to check whether it was really okay to go ahead. I reassured him and he trotted up the trail to sniff ahead of the pack. Sputnik joined him a short while later, and the two of them together headed for the shade of the nearest tree. During our first water break, I decided to keep the water coming until Sputnik and Racer each turned away - Griff wasn't interested in taking a drink. Sputnik drank for a while, but Racer drank water for so long that I started growing concerned that she was going to vomit from overfilling her belly. She eventually turned aside, and thankfully kept the water down throu

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik and Riley had a good time sniffing and marking spots all along the trails at the Chautauqua this morning. Sputnik was usually the first to home in on a point of interest, and then Riley would follow up behind him. There were several areas that caught their attention, and more so near the trail head. Variety Pack Poppy, Rey, Lou, and Zoey headed to the Bear Creek Path for their walk this afternoon. When we stopped for a photo, Poppy, Rey, and Lou were very curious about a dog barking in a yard adjacent to Martin Park, while Zoey was unperturbed. The rest of the walk was uneventful. Rey pulled over to the grass beside the path to sniff as we walked, but she still ke

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger followed Dylan around, as Dylan scouted ahead on the trails at the Chautauqua today. They never wandered too far, and were both pretty good about turning back and checking in when I called them. We came by quite a few other dogs along the way, so Sputnik stayed on leash with me for the hike. The pack was very good about pulling over to the side of the trail with me and staying calm as the other dogs passed. Variety Pack Poppy and Lou were both full of energy this afternoon. Lou's energy was mostly directed at me, as she kept wiggling, leaning into me, sitting at my feet, and rolling onto her back in front of me. Poppy had more playful energy. When we stopped

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Griff, and Racer enjoyed hiking at the Chautauqua this morning. Sputnik got to spend some time off leash with Griff again today. Every now and then, I remember how much Racer used to pull on leash during our hikes, and I am struck by how greatly she has improved on that front. Variety Pack Mamacita and Avo were back at it with rolling in the grass together today. Riley even joined in at one point. As usual, Zoey did not indulge in such antics during our walk. However, she was happy to sniff around the trunks of trees alongside her packmates.

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We came across a pretty empty and open stretch of trail at the Chautauqua this morning, so Sputnik was able to join Dylan off leash for a bit. There were a couple forks along the way where Dylan had different ideas about which trail we should be taking, but he wasn't too stubborn when he saw me heading the other way. I stopped to offer Sputnik some water at one point, and Dylan came and sat at my feet with his back to me, implicitly requesting some love. I also offered him a drink from the CamelBak, but he was only interested in a back rub. Variety Pack Poppy was very happy to be back with the pack after sitting out for a short while, and her friend Rey gave her a very enth

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff sniffed at the air for a while when we stopped for a water break just before heading up the mountain from the Baseline Trail. We weren't far from the Gregory Canyon Trail Head that accesses the Saddle Rock Trail that we are avoiding for now, since other pack members have bristled at unseen disturbances there in recent days. We saw quite a few other dogs on the mountain today, and Sputnik minded his manners very nicely. He only got a little annoyed when one juvenile dog was a bit excited and was pulling at their leash, toward us; and he was perfectly pleasant as we went by all the other dogs we saw. One very little Australian Shepherd puppy stopped to say hello near t

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Riley and Sputnik headed to the Chautauqua this morning. We started up the Saddle Rock Trail, but the dogs both started to seem a bit unsettled. After the pack's unease around a similar point along the trail last Friday, I might have been making something out of nothing; but I decided to head back and go up a different trail again. I am thinking that we'll just skip Saddle Rock for now, to avoid the chance of any unpleasant potential encounters with wildlife there. Variety Pack Rey and Zoey wanted to sniff their ways all around the park at the beginning of our walk along the Bear Creek Path this afternoon. Lou poked around a bit, but did not have her nose glued to the gras

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack was heading up the Saddle Rock Trail when Dylan suddenly stopped in place, perked up his ears, and started growling. Sputnik, Roger Roger, and Curie were all pretty quick to join in. They were staring off the trail, into the brush. I couldn't figure out what they were looking at, but Dylan was fully focused, and the others were all uneasy. Concerned that Dylan might have detected a bear or mountain lion hiding in the brush, we headed back and went up the Bluebell-Baird Trail instead. We had no strange encounters there, and Roger Roger and Dylan were able to enjoy some time roaming off leash together. Curie and Sputnik were happy to see each other again and were

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The packs have been all about sniffing lately. Sputnik, Racer, and Griff were no exception, today. We took our time on the relatively flat trails that go through the Chautauqua Meadow, giving the dogs ample opportunity to sniff to their hearts' contents. Variety Pack Zoey, Mamacita, Riley, and Avo were less focused on sniffing than their morning counterparts, but still wanted to check out a few spots here and there on our way around Wonderland Lake. Everyone was in agreement to stop for a short rest in the shade of a big tree right by the northeast edge of the pond - a spot that the pack often finds inviting.

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Dylan, Ruffers, and Sputnik all spent the early part of our hike putting their noses to work, but were a little more on the same page about the points of interest than the pack was Monday. Despite the slow start, we ended up making it a good way up the Saddle Rock Trail. Dylan and Ruffers explored off leash, but didn't wander very far. At one point, everybody's ears perked up at the sounds of bird songs and a dog barking far off in the distance. The Saddle Rock Trail was again pretty empty, as we only encountered a few other hikers on the mountain. Variety Pack Zoey and Rey headed to CU South this afternoon, and had a fun time wandering through the brush as they let their

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Racer, and Sputnik took a moment to do some thorough sniffing around the trail head at the Chautauqua. However, once we got a little bit up the trail, they were all more interested in keeping on the move. Even though the Chautauqua was quite busy, the Saddle Rock Trail was sparsely traveled; so Sputnik got to join Griff off-leash for a while, and the two of them had fun racing each other up the trail. When one got ahead, they would wait in place and look back at the other. Then, the other would zoom up and outpace the one who was waiting. They took turns like that for a little while. Meanwhile, Racer was walking very nicely by my side, and I stopped every so often

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Riley, Sputnik, and Ruffers all had a lot of sniffing on the agenda today. Riley and Sputnik were mostly on the same page, gravitating toward the same shrubs and tufts of grass. Ruffers' priorities were different. To appease everyone, we kept going back and forth from one side of the trail to the other. This made for slow progress on the hike, but it also made for a pack of pups whose olfactory interests were well satisfied. Variety Pack Parasailers were out by Wonderland Lake this afternoon, and Rey was again transfixed by them. Zoey and Lou also stared up at the strange people floating around us, but their curiosities were fleeting. Rey kept looking up to wonder at the

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Dylan had fun wiggling his way down the snowy slopes on his back, while Roger Roger and Sputnik sniffed along the edge of the trail and peed on all the nearby foliage. A little further up the trail, Roger Roger and Dylan enjoyed exploring off leash together, while Sputnik was at my side. We encountered several other dogs on the trails today, and the pack was cool and collected each time. Variety Pack Lou, Zoey, and Ruffers headed to Wonderland Lake this afternoon. We made a couple stops early on, as the girls wanted to sniff in the little park we passed by on the way there. After that, we kept on the move pretty steadily until pausing for a photo op on the mountain trail.

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer, Sputnik, and Griff were all very interested in sniffing various shrubs and fallen branches along the trails at the Chautauqua this morning. We slowly made our way to Gregory Canyon, along the Baseline Trail, while they sniffed to their satisfaction on the way. As we headed up the narrow Gregory Canyon Trail, a couple off-leash dogs rounded a corner ahead of us. The whole pack barked at them until I brought them down a short side path to let the other dogs pass with their humans who were following shortly behind them. We passed the same dogs a little while later, as we were making our way back, and the pack all minded their manners far better that time. Variety Pack

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers bounded through the snow and play-bowed, poised to bolt as soon as Dylan made a move. They had a long stare-off, and Ruffers couldn't take the anticipation any longer. She ran toward Dylan then turned up the trail. Dylan jogged after her with a much more casual pace than her own, and then they weaved around through a small wooded area opposite the Bluebell-Mesa branch off of the Chautauqua Trail. Shortly after that, a couple hikers came sliding down a stretch of the slushy trail, and Dylan ran up to them, barking. He went back on the leash after that display, and I kept him on until we came to an area with no other people around. Sputnik and Ruffers got a turn of

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The rain and sleet mix made for some droopy faces among the pack today. The trails were mostly empty, as apparently not many people wanted to brave the weather. We did see one other dog, who came up from behind us as the pack were taking their time sniffing around on our way up the Saddle Rock Trail. I was tipped off to the other dog's approach when Sputnik started lagging behind. We pulled over to the side of the trail to let them pass. Sputnik minded his manners very nicely, as did Griff and Racer. We didn't see any other hikers after that, and soon started making our way back down the mountain. Once we made it back to the packmobile, I towel dried each of them in tur

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack There are an abundance of pine cones in the dried-up bed of the stream that runs along the Saddle Rock Trail, and Racer wanted to check them out. Meanwhile, Dylan explored up and down the stream bed, but without any particular focus on the pine cones. Roger Roger and Sputnik hung out on the slope just behind me and caught their breaths while we waited for their packmates to finish checking things out. Everyone but Dylan was happy to take some water before we started up the mountain again. We didn't double back at any point, the way we had been doing at the Red Rocks Trails, so Dylan maintained his scouting position throughout the hike, a little way ahead of the pack. By t

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack took a very slow pace on the trails this morning. Avo and Sputnik were especially distracted by the smells along the way. They kept wanting to head off of the trail to wade through the tall grass, or sniff their way down little footpaths. Griff and Racer weren't the ones initiating the detours, but they seemed happy enough to follow their packmates rather than move along the trail. Variety Pack Mamacita, Zoey, Riley, and Avo all sniffed around a lot at the beginning of our afternoon walk at the Bear Creek Path. Before long, though, we got moving on the path with very few pauses. Mamacita needed a little encouragement now and then, to keep moving. Avo veered off

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack headed to the Chautauqua in the cooler weather today. The small creek that runs along the Saddle Rock Trail was almost all dried up, but there was still shade throughout the area. Sputnik and Avo were quick to take water from the CamelBak. Ruffers and Dylan were a little unsure, but eventually took a drink as well. We saw a couple other dogs along the way, and the pack calmly came over to the side of the trail with me, to let them pass. It was a big contrast with earlier, when they all barked at a couple dogs that walked by the car just after we parked near the trail head. Variety Pack Rey, Zoey, and Poppy enjoyed a bit of time off-leash at CU South this afternoo
