Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Racer, Colby, Griff, and Sputnik all love to put their noses to work when they hit the trails. As a result, we took our time during the early part of our ascent, with plenty of stops for investigations along the way. Later on in the hike, Sputnik and Colby romped around together a bit. Racer went another hike with minimal pulling on the leash - a trend that I hope becomes more and more typical for her. Variety Pack Zoey, Rey, Zoe, and Isaac went for a light hike around the CU South Campus trail loop this afternoon. Rey and Zoey started running around and tackling each other at the first chance, as they have come to do whenever they come out together. Isaac ran around with

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger and Sputnik sniffed around off leash together. There was a moment when it looked like they might break out into some play, but then they just walked past each other. Sputnik came over to me, Rucksack, and Mamacita, and resumed sniffing along the side of the trail, while Roger Roger found a stick and chewed on it for a minute. A man asked for a business card on our way back down the trail. The pups were all hanging out calmly until I passed him a card, at which point Mamacita jumped up at him with an intimidating growl. It had been a very long time since she reacted to someone like that, even with all the people coming up to us lately to pet the pack. Variety P

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita wiggled around in the grass while Roger Roger sniffed around her. Roger Roger gave Rucksack a slightly harder time when they were off leash together today, but he was still mostly pretty respectful of his big brother and backed off promptly when scolded for his harassing behavior. After starting the week with bad manners towards other dogs on the trails, Sputnik gradually improved his disposition throughout the week and was perfectly pleasant today. Mamacita exhibited a similar pattern over the course of the week. Variety Pack Oliver, Benny, Milo, and Zoey enjoyed a leisurely walk by Wonderland Lake today. Benny dragged a bit at the beginning, but picked up his pa

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik soaked up the love again today when some hikers stopped and asked to pet the dogs. Racer followed up for some pets as well. Colby seemed on the verge of going up to say hello as she watched and whimpered with ambivalence from a short distance. Griff was indifferent and just stood in place until they moved on. Racer had one of her best days walking on leash, as she barely pulled at all. The whole pack was in the mood to sniff today. Everyone was quick to head into the brush beside the trail to investigate the odors there whenever we made a stop along the way. Variety Pack We took a very slow pace at first, as Benny, Oliver, and Zoey all meandered through the grass

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers and Sputnik both sniffed around the trails at the Chautauqua this morning. There were surprisingly few hikers for such a nice, autumn day. Sputnik usually tries to get Ruffers to play with him, but I didn't see him make any attempts today. The pair of them just trotted along the trail and sniffed here and there along the way, while Mamacita hiked on leash at my side. Variety Pack Mamacita wiggled in the grass three times as we made our way around Wonderland Lake this afternoon. Meanwhile, Zoey and Benny were both interested in sniffing around in the grass. Rey's attention bounced around from sniffing, to playfully hopping around Mamacita, to watching people and do

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff, Colby, Sputnik, and Racer all enjoyed hiking together at the Chautauqua this morning. Everybody wanted to sniff out a different spot as we walked along a short stretch of the Baseline Trail on our way to the Chautauqua Trail head. Sputnik and Racer got some love from passing hikers as we headed up the mountain, while Colby watched warily from a safe distance, and Griff stood idly by. Racer actually followed at the back of the pack for a long stretch of the hike today. Variety Pack There was a Vizsla who ran around with Zoey and Rey briefly, while Isaac started up fetch and Mamacita sniffed around. Isaac, Rey, Zoey, and Mamacita all stuck together as we made our way

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack After Roger Roger's foray into the scat pile last Friday, he stayed on leash for our hike today. Early on, we passed a Pit Bull on his way down the trail whose legs scrambled beneath him as he tried to pull over to us. Sputnik responded with a growl, but stayed at my far side and didn't make any attempt to cross over toward the somewhat frantic dog. Mamacita, Rucksack, and Roger Roger all ignored him and walked on, calmly. We pulled over to the side of the trail a couple times when Mamacita slowed down. I expected her to go for a wiggle in the grass, but each time, she just sniffed around for a minute and then was ready to move on. Variety Pack Rey has really taken a liki

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita went for an early wiggle in the grass on our way up the Chautauqua Trail. She had stopped in place a couple times before that, but then gave no indication of what she wanted to do. The third time she stopped, she walked off the side of the trail and then flopped down in the grass. Sputnik had taken the opportunities to leave scent marks in the grass during each of the previous stops, but once Mama got to wiggling, he just stood aside and watched her go. Roger Roger behaved himself very well with his brother, Rucksack; but he found other trouble to get into instead. Apparently there was some wet scat in the tall grass on the way up the 2nd/3rd Flatiron Loop, and R

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack has gotten a lot of love from hikers at the Chautauqua lately. Today, Sputnik and Racer moved right in when a few young ladies asked to pet the dogs. Griff and Colby both hung back. After a minute of watching her packmates get all the attention, Colby decided she wanted in, too. She ran right up and crawled into one girl's lap to give her kisses. Griff was still unmoved, and just waited on the trail for the others to be done. Racer had one of her better days walking on leash. Even still, she tried pulling ahead frequently; but she seemed to be generally aware of sticking with pack, and it was much easier to regain her attention than at some other times. Variety

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik and Ruffers investigated the ditches on our way up the Chautauqua Trail this morning. Ruffers hung back a bit, as she likes to do, while Sputnik walked right alongside me, Zoe, and Mamacita. Whenever Sputnik stopped to sniff a spot at the side of the trail, Zoe was quick to run over and check it out for herself, as well. Sputnik and Mamacita were both a bit ornery when it came to passing other dogs today. Sputnik has long been moody in that way, but I was surprised to see Mamacita react because it has been a long time since she's shown that kind of behavior. I suspect that the colder weather is going to bring that out more as the season goes on. Variety Pack Rey a

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik took notice of a squirrel who was hanging out on the tree next to where we parked by the Chautauqua this morning. The squirrel took notice of him, in turn, and the two of them had a long staring contest. Griff also perked up and watched. Eventually, the squirrel headed up the tree and we headed out to the trails. Racer and Sputnik did a bit of romping through the snow beside the trail. Griff and Colby kept to the trail and didn't make detours into the snowy banks like their packmates. Variety Pack The pack made two friends at the dog park today. One was a young German Shepherd, and the other was a dog with a wiry, white coat. Isaac, Milo, Coco, Zoey, and Rey all

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger and Sputnik swept out to either edge of the trail so they could graze on snow as we walked. Rucksack and Mamacita poked their noses in the snow here and there, as well; but Roger Roger and Sputnik really got faces full of snow, though, as they kept going back for more. Variety Pack Coco and Zoey also wanted to munch on snow during our walk, just like the morning pack members. We made a lot of stops on our way around Wonderland Lake, so they could indulge.

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Mamacita went for a wiggle in the grass early on, right at the trail head. There were a lot of Golden Retrievers at the Chautauqua this morning. Rucksack and Roger Roger sniffed them in passing as we made our way up the mountain, while Sputnik and Mamacita stayed at my side. Sputnik was calm and collected with all the Golden Retrievers, but he lost his cool when another dog passed by, so I had him sit and then lie down on the trail for a minute. We've been seeing a lot of deer in the area this week, so I kept the pack on leash today. Variety Pack Sputnik licked Coco's ears a bunch as they hung out in the packmobile, before Sputnik got dropped off. Coco and Zoey had a lot

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff ran around more with Colby today. The two of them had a lot of fun racing through the brush together. They both got pretty wet, since the grass is still coated with snow in various stages of melting. Sputnik and Racer watched their packmates with interest, but thankfully didn't pull and lunge like Sputnik did with Mamacita did yesterday. Earlier in the hike, when everyone was still on leash, a pretty big buck crossed the trail only about 20 yards ahead of us. Sputnik, Colby, and Griff were busy sniffing along the side of the trail and didn't take notice, but Racer saw the buck and really wanted to go after it. I slowed and let it pass down over a hill before we mov

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers and Zoey had a lot of fun chasing each other around through the snowy brush at the Chautauqua this morning. Sputnik and Mamacita both watched their packmates intently and leapt at them whenever they ran by us on the trail. The whole pack was full of energy! Even when she wasn't trying to join in with the others, Mamacita kept doing her funny hop move as we walked. When Sputnik was off the leash, he ran laps around the rest of us. He tried to get Ruffers into a chase, but she was either tired out from playing with Zoey or just not interested.

Tuesday Pack Activities

Sorry for the lack of photos today. My phone battery was replaced this morning, and the phone was broken in the process. I have a replacement now, but didn't have it on hand for pack activities. Adventure Pack Colby ran in big circles through the tall grass today. Griff joined her briefly, but mostly stuck to the trail. Sputnik and Racer walked through the tall grass beside the trail to sniff around at several points along the way. Despite the lack of actual rainfall, the whole pack was pretty well soaked by the time we got back to the car! Variety Pack Isaac, Zoey, and Rey walked the Bear Creek Path together this afternoon. Rey was bursting with energy, so I indulged her by taking the

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack We hardly came across anyone at the Chautauqua this morning. The cold, wet weather discouraged a lot of hikers from coming out. Mamacita was on the same page as them, and not too thrilled to be out in the misty rain. She didn't resist hopping out of the car at the trail head, and she trotted along dutifully, but it was written all over her face. Meanwhile, Sputnik, Roger Roger, and Rucksack were happy to be out. On our way back down, we saw a herd of deer crossing the trail about 50 yards ahead. Everyone perked up at the sight. Rucksack and Roger Roger both started whining and kept it up until the deer disappeared over a crest. Variety Pack The rain had mostly stopped f

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The Chautauqua was bustling today. On our way up the trail, Rucksack became very excited about a dog on the way down. It turned out to be his friend, Finn! Finn's mom recognized Rucksack, and Finn came over to say hi to Rucksack and Roger Roger while Mamacita and Sputnik waited at my side. As we continued on our hike, we came across two different groups of people who were enamored with the pack and wanted to say hello. Sputnik and Roger Roger served as co-ambassadors as they were both eager to offer their heads for pats, to lean against those who obliged, and to give them kisses. Mamacita was a bit more reserved, but she gradually edged closer and then accepted some pats

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik, Racer, Griff, and Colby hiked up the 2nd & 3rd Flatiron Loop this afternoon. Racer was a bit scattered as we made our way across the boulders on our way up the trail. We stopped a couple times to regroup along the way to avoid any stumbles, since footing can be a little tricky there. Thankfully, the rest of the pack was in sync and made it easier. After that, Racer finally fell into rhythm and stopped pulling around so much. When we stopped to take a water break, I asked the dogs if they were thirsty. Sputnik immediately perked up, looked straight at me, tilted his head, and licked his lips. Racer and Colby also turned their attentions to me, though I think the

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Zoe was pumped to get out on the trails with her friends. When we parked by the Chautauqua, she barked with enthusiasm. She pulled a bit more than average on the leash, as that enthusiasm carried on throughout the hike. Meanwhile, Mamacita seemed to be feeling a little off as she kept wanting to pull over, to stand around and nibble on grass. She was more eager to take water than usual, and she seemed a little more invigorated after each water break. Ruffers followed her usual habit of hanging behind the pack, while Sputnik stuck right alongside us even for most of the time he spent off leash. Variety Pack Rey was immediately greeted by a pair of young pups at the Valmont
