Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack headed back to the Bear Creek Path. Rucksack is healing from a bad run-in with a stick which found him in the emergency vet on Christmas Day. He seemed to be doing fine as he trotted along with Coco, Mamacita, and Sputnik this morning; but he needs to stay on leash for the time being so he doesn't reopen the wound. Variety Pack Clover and Monarch joined our Friday afternoon regulars Coco, Thompson, and Stella on a pack walk along the Boulder Creek Path this afternoon. Coco and Stella refrained from wiggling for the duration of our outing. Everyone was on different pages for the first few minutes out, until a few pack members relieved themselves and then were a bit

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Clover and Monarch joined the pack outing, as well as Mamacita, along with Thursday morning regulars Coco and Sputnik. We headed to the Bear Creek Path and enjoyed a nice walk. Everyone trotted along in place very well. Coco grunted a little at the few dogs we passed, but the rest of the pack just kept walking and didn't take any particular notice of them. Variety Pack Isaac, Stella, Thompson, and Ruffers enjoyed their own walk along the Bear Creek Path today. Stella shouldered-down into the snow briefly, but didn't go for a full wiggle. Isaac saw this and decided to go all-in, as he flopped into the snow and wiggled around on his back for a minute. Thompson and Stella b

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers was in a very playful mood this morning. She ran around with several different dogs we passed on the trails and made playful dodges with both Mamacita and Sputnik. Isaac walked along nicely in pace with me while his packmates danced around us. Variety Pack It had been pretty windy in the morning but it really picked up when we were out during the afternoon. Much of the stretches of trail that were blanketed with ice and snow in the morning were mostly clear by the time we passed the same spots a few hours later. Yoda and Coco explored the scents all along the trail this afternoon. Neither was in a particularly playful mood but both were feeling very curious and li

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff was pumped to run through the snow this morning. Coco couldn't keep up with him and was more interested in rubbing her coat up against every tree she could find anyway. When Sputnik went off the leash, he gave Griff a real workout while making it look easy. Coco managed to put a few new tears in her coat along the way. Griff paused a few times during the hike to pick snow out from between his toes. Variety Pack Thompson, Isaac, and Sputnik enjoyed a walk to Wonderland Lake together this afternoon. I expected to maybe see a few lifted paws along the way - not from Thompson, but from Isaac and possibly Sputnik - however, everyone made it through the walk without any t

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Rucksack was sporting a tight new 'do so he didn't collect any snowballs as we made our way along the trails this morning. Cooper barked eagerly when we arrived at the trail head and he saw the other dogs hiking. Thankfully he reined it in a bit when we got out and started hiking. Sputnik was more tolerant today when dogs came over to the pack to sniff hello, and only grumbled a little bit if they lingered while directly facing him. I was surprised that Mamacita didn't break out her patented rear-back-then-leap-forward move as we hiked through the snow today, but she just trotted along normally. Rucksack gave her a little bit of the ear treatment at the end of the hike bu

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff and Coco kicked off the fun as they raced up and down the snowy trail together. Sputnik and Colby were both testy around the first couple dogs we saw so they stayed on leash until we came to a stretch of open trail without anyone else around. Coco was happy to join in with the two of them to run through the snow more. By that time, Griff had already run off most of his energy and he spent most of the remaining hike sniffing around in the snow. Variety Pack Isaac was a bundle of energy just raring to get out on the trail this afternoon. He sped by Zoey and Ruffers, who were also eager to romp in the snow. Blu tried to keep up but had trouble matching the speed of his

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby and Sputnik both had brief, snarly outbursts when a Vizsla (perhaps the same one from yesterday) started to approach the pack as I was picking up after them. For each of them, they only acted out for a fraction of a second and then snapped out of it as soon as their lunges reached tension on the leash. I suspect they were both in an alert and protective mindset because they recognized that I was preoccupied with picking up Sputnik's poop and they didn't want a dog sneaking up on me. Mamacita and Ruffers were unconcerned and just wanted to sniff hello with the Vizsla. Later on, Ruffers and Colby lingered behind to thoroughly sniff out various points of interest along

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack A friendly Vizsla with a tennis ball in his mouth trotted up to the pack to sniff hello with everyone, and everyone greeted him very nicely. It was a pleasant change from Sputnik's attitude yesterday, and Coco didn't make any grumpy snorts either. Later on during our hike, Griff and Colby both seemed to become focused on something off in the distance. I looked across the field, thinking there may have been a coyote (as they have occasionally been spotted in the area), but I didn't see anything. Eventually, Colby stopped looking. Griff lingered a little longer and I did another scan but still couldn't see anything, and then Griff turned his attention back to the trail in f

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Rucksack and Mamacita enjoyed sniffing hello with all the dogs who passed by us on the trails at CU South Campus this morning. Coco said hello to some and grunted at others. Sputnik was a bit on edge about the dogs who came up to us so I kept him on a short leash and interrupted his attention whenever he started to fixate. When we came across a stretch without any other dogs around, Sputnik and Coco had some fun chasing each other around. Variety Pack Thompson, Colby, Zoey, Stella, and Coco walked the Bear Creek Path together this afternoon. Coco chewed on a bit of grass and tossed her head around playfully but stopped short of diving down for a wiggle. Stella had a bit o

Friday Pack Activities

adventure Pack With all the deer that have been around lately and recent wandering tendencies of several pack members, I decided to keep everyone on leash for out hike up to the Enchanted Mesa this morning. Rucksack, Coco, and Mamacita all chomped on some snow along the way, while Sputnik just wanted to sniff it. We were approached by exuberant off-leash dogs a couple times along the way and had friendly greetings with them. I kept Sputnik's attention when the dogs came up to us, and gave him lots of pets as he stayed calm and didn't make a peep of protest or aggression. Variety Pack Pack friend and park regular Molly joined the afternoon walk as she is staying with us for the weekend. S

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff was very keen on following tracks in the snow with his nose today. Sputnik just wanted to run around. Griff joined him for some sprints but was no match for Sputnik's athleticism as Sputnik literally ran circles around him. Coco got a bit worked up watching Sputnik race around, and the two of them dodged around each other a bit whenever Sputnik came over to us. Colby was a little more aware of other hikers today and checked over her shoulder frequently whenever there was someone on the trail behind us, but she wasn't quite as jumpy about it as she has been in the past. Variety Pack Zoey, Ruffers, and Isaac all raced around with a few playful pups at the park this aft

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Ruffers and Colby had some fun running around the trails together. Whenever they found an interesting spot to sniff, Sputnik was quick to join them and check it out for himself. Mamacita wasn't so interested in sniffing spots along the way but she really perked up when we came upon a small herd of deer. Colby and Ruffers also quickly took notice, and Colby was off in a heartbeat. Ruffers stayed put on the trail a few paces behind me, Sputnik, and Mamacita, but she watched with intense interest while Mamacita leapt up and down and whined. Sputnik was calm but curious as he watched the deer run off. Colby didn't follow them for long and rejoined the pack about 30 seconds l

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Colby and Coco wandered around the Enchanted Mesa off leash this morning, finding places of olfactory interest to be followed up on by Griff and Sputnik. Later on, Sputnik and Griff took a turn off leash and did some exploring of their own. Griff led the way while Sputnik lingered behind to check out spots really thoroughly and then raced to catch up with the rest of us. They both enjoyed hopping on top of a big boulder and sniffing around in its pockets and crevices. Variety Pack Isaac, Zoey, and Ruffers all found a couple other playful dogs to race around with at the park. Meanwhile, Thompson found a human sitting at a picnic table in the center of the park who was happ

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The pack enjoyed their hike to Enchanted Mesa this morning. A passing dog barked at the pack on our way up the trail. Coco and Sputnik only gave a little grumble in response. Then, Sputnik stopped in place and calmly watched as the other dog and her human made their way down the trail. Coco occupied herself by sniffing around in the grass, while Mamacita and Rucksack just looked ahead and wondered what the hold-up was for. Sputnik was eventually satisfied that the other dog was leaving and then we headed up to the mesa, where everyone enjoyed sniffing along the trail here and there as we went. Variety Pack Coco wiggled in the grass at Martin Park, along the Bear Creek Pat

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Coco flopped down in the grass for a wiggle right after we set out on the trail this morning. Sputnik and Roger Roger just stood and sniffed around while Coco did her thing, but Mamacita decided that a wiggle looked like fun so she flopped down next to Coco and the two of them wiggled their hearts out. Variety Pack Benny, Coco, and Colby wandered through the grass to sniff around while Mamacita, Stella, and Thompson walked along with me. Colby was very interested in the scents they found and she lingered for a long while, taking her time as she followed her nose through the grass. Benny only ventured away from the trail occasionally. Thompson made several stops along the w

Thursday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack The dogs were all worked up this morning! Even Griff barked at a dog from the car, along with Sputnik and Coco, after we parked by the trail head. A little while later, the pack was greeted by a German Shepherd along the trails. Griff and Coco went over to say hello and everyone was being polite, but Sputnik got upset and growled. Despite her packmates' agitated states, Colby stayed calm and collected throughout our hike. Variety Pack The variety pack group was much calmer today than their morning counterparts. After a bit of sniffing around early on, everyone fell into and nice rhythm and trotted along very pleasantly. Benny, Colby, and Zoey brought up my right side whil

Wednesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Sputnik was the first to identify interesting spots to sniff along the trails while Ruffers, Mamacita, and Colby all followed up whenever he lingered somewhere. Mamacita started rearing back and hopping forward during the latter half of our hike, as she often does in cooler weather. When she does it, I'm not sure whether she is feeling playful, or is just trying to get us to hurry up and get back to the warmth of the car. I think it's at least sometimes the former, because in the past she has done it not only on the way back but on the way up the trail as well. Ruffers had thrown a playful paw or two at Sputnik early on in the hike but she didn't join Mamacita in her later

Tuesday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Griff and Coco wandered over to a patch of grass beside the trail that overlooks a canyon when I first let them off leash this morning. Sputnik wanted to see what had drawn his packmates so I walked him over as well. Griff stuck around and sniffed for a while alongside Sputnik, but Coco was quickly back on the move. Variety Pack Isaac had both Zoey and Roger Roger to contend with in fetch this afternoon; however, Zoey came and went as she was enjoying greeting other dogs and exploring the park. Roger Roger, on the other hand, kept close to Isaac's heel for most of our park visit. Every so often, Ruffers or Zoey would get a chase started and the four of them would all race

Monday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Roger Roger joined the pack in his brother Rucksack's stead this morning. He indulged in a joy that Rucksack has forsaken for some time now, when he found a stick beside the trail and decided it looked good enough to bring back. Coco and Mamacita dodged him as he ran up and down the trail showing questionable regard for the dimensions of his prize, however modest they were. Before he found the stick, Roger Roger and Coco had been playing tag while Sputnik leapt around beside me and whined at his exuberant packmates in much the style that Mamacita has in the past. Variety Pack Coco, Isaac, Stella, and Thompson enjoyed a walk at the CU South Campus trails this afternoon. We

Friday Pack Activities

Adventure Pack Coco loves to jump at Rucksack when I first let the pack out of the car. She has for years and she continues to do so. Even after her long hiatus a few years ago, she was right back to old habits when she saw her old friend. I wonder whether Rucksack ever appreciates the familiar ritual, or is just annoyed by her exuberant assault. He never grumbles about it, so he can't be bothered too much. I took the pack at our normal pace today as I am feeling fully recuperated. We still took our time for the first stretch after the trail head because everyone wanted to sniff around and pee on everything, but once we got going we kept a good rhythm. Mamacita and Sputnik stayed on
